An effective treatment.
In addition to our other specialties, Dr. Stefanie Sanger Woollen and Dr. Rebecca Sturmer are experienced practitioners of acupuncture and acupressure. Acupuncture, when used in conjunction with other techniques, works to relieve a wide range of ailments, from pain and stress, to internal and structural discomforts. It involves the insertion of very fine needles (or the application of pressure of vibration, in the case of acupressure) on the surface of the body to influence the physical and physiological functions of the body.
A respected technique.
Acupuncture (and acupressure) has been used to treat illness for over 5,000 years. The technique works by “re-programming” and restoring your body’s normal functions by stimulating specific points in order to redirect energy and restore balance to your overall system. Just as electrical impulses flow from our brain throughout our body by means of our nerves, energy travels through our system by means of meridians. When our bodies are ill or out of balance, energy can be blocked or inhibited from traveling freely through these pathways. Acupuncture helps re-balance our system by relaxing blockages and correcting mis-directed energies so your body can work at its optimal efficiency.
Although this technique is many millennia old, there are many modern theories as to why acupuncture is such an effective therapy. Some physicians believe it stimulates the secretions of endorphins (the “feel good” hormones) of the body, or that it may effect certain neurotransmitter levels, such as serotonin and noradrenaline. The “Augmentation of Immunity” Theory suggests that acupuncture raises levels of triglycerides, specific hormones, prostaglandins, white blood counts, gamma globulins, opsonins, and overall anti-body levels for a marked increase in immune response. One of the most popular theories is the “Gate Control” Theory, which states that acupuncture relieves pain by closing “gates,” or nerve fibers that carry the impulses of pain. This allows your body to function correctly without the common misperceptions of pain that can disrupt normal bodily functions.

An enjoyable practice.
Many prospective patients worry that acupuncture will be painful. However, after receiving a treatment, many will tell you that the sensation caused during acupuncture is pleasurable. Our doctors are sensitive to your comfort and will make sure you are relaxed and comfortable with all methods employed during your treatment. In addition, we use the utmost care and hygiene in our practice, using disposable needles that, once used, are discarded in accordance with medical biohazard regulations and guidelines.
For those patients who are leery of needles, Dr. Stefanie and Dr. Rebecca are happy to modify the treatment with alternative methods to ensure complete comfort and confidence. Communicating any hesitations you might have will help ensure the most effective and enjoyable treatment plan.
